Our approach to responsibility

We design for longevity and believe that the most responsible product is a product that can withstand the test of time.

We take our responsibility seriously, producing high-quality products, made to use and built to last. We collaborate with industry leaders and suppliers because we recognize that opting for better solutions is a shared responsibility and brings us all closer, faster, to lessen environmental harm and improve social impact. We exclusively work with third-party experts to test and certify our products.

Enduring Design

Crafted with honest materials, our pieces are made to use and built to last and we pride ourselves with a claim rate of less than 1%.

In our process, we dare to blend different time periods, design directions, cultures and materials. This results in products that exude attitude and relevance, bridging the gap between classic and modern design and establishing our relevance in the market.

For several of our furniture pieces, spare parts can be removed. For instance, our Elephant, NY11, and Bufala Chairs come with replaceable seat pads.

Production, suppliers and logistics

We collaborate with highly experienced manufacturers and suppliers across our supply chain to ensure our products meet and exceed environmental and social standards.

We maintain high standards for product quality and ethical manufacturing conditions. We partner with trusted production companies known for their high-quality standards and a commitment to sustainability and worker well-being.

The majority of the NORR11 collection is manufactured using European supplies that strictly adhere to EU environmental standards and industry certifications. The remaining portion of our collection is produced in China with production partners with expertise within specific fields. We conduct regular visits to production sites to ensure they align with our quality standards. In accordance with legislation, an Amfori BSCI report is generated yearly to uphold consistent with the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights.

Our strategically located warehouse, on the outskirts of Berlin, is close to our production and logistics partners, facilitating efficient delivery to key European markets. Whenever possible, we deliver directly from our manufacturers to the customer, reducing unnecessary freight between production facilities and warehouses.

Packaging

We are taking steps towards improving more sustainable alternatives in our protective packing. All of our packaging cardboard is FSC certified, and in 2022, we started replacing styrofoam with cardboard for our lighting products.

Materials

The textiles and leathers we use for upholstery already hold various certifications, such as VOC testing, ANSI/BIFMA, Nordic Swan Ecolabel and many more, catering to different needs and requirements.

We prioritize honest, responsibly sourced quality materials. Our suppliers are industry leaders, with many having over 50 years of experience and all operate at the highest environmental standards.

As part of our DNA, we work with natural materials with durable properties that are sourced responsibly. Natural materials such as wood, leather, bamboo, rattan, metal, and travertine form the body of our collection. Additionally, some of our products incorporate man-made materials, and the same applies to certain fabrics used for upholstery. For instance, the seat shells for the Langue series are molded from a highly durable glass fiber reinforced polypropylene. We are always looking for ways to optimize and improve the choice of materials used for our collection.

We use leather from renowned Sørensen Leather. The leather hides we use are natural byproducts from other industries. These hides are produced in strict compliance with international standards for animal welfare and hygiene. You can learn more about the different leather we use here.

Most of our wood is FSC certified and sourced within the EU. We use water-based lacquer for all our wooden products. This choice reduces the emission of harmful substances significantly, leading to better indoor and outdoor air quality and improved working conditions during production. Read more about the wood we use here.

To minimize waste, we reuse shapes, molds and reappropriate by-products of the production line when possible.

Certifications and testing

To maintain our commitment to high quality, we prioritize ongoing testing as a fundamental aspect of our development procedures. Our goal is that all furniture eventually will uphold different certifications. This is your guarantee that our products are responsibly made and safe to use.

We've chosen tests, labels, and certificates that relate to our product range and address different aspects of responsibility. Our goal is for all our furniture to eventually meet either an EN European Standard or pass an ANSI/BIFMA test.

The EN strength and stability testing is the official European Standard testing, that is a set of procedures and criteria for evaluating the stability, strength, and durability of products. These standards provide manufacturers with guidelines to ensure their products meet the necessary safety and quality standards for sale within the European Union.

Example: Our NY11 chair is L2 tested, indicating its suitability for extreme use environments such as restaurants, airports, healthcare institutions or even nightclubs.

The ANSI/BIFMA testing refers to a set of standards and testing procedures developed by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the Business and Institutional Furniture Manufacturers Association (BIFMA). Much like the EN European test, these standards are designed to ensure the quality, safety, and performance of office and institutional furniture.

VOC testing is used to measure and analyze the presence and concentration of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in various substances, such as indoor air, products or materials. A TVOC certificate guarantees that no harmful emissions are released into the environment and guarantees that no harmful emissions are released to the indoor atmosphere.

REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation, and Restriction of Chemicals) is a European Union (EU) regulation designed to manage and control the use of chemicals in the European market, ensuring a high level of protection for human health and the environment. This comprehensive regulation applies to all chemical substances. It encompasses a list of more than 10,000 chemicals, and companies are obligated to document the safe use of these substances, whether produced within the EU or imported into it.

FSC (The Forest Stewardship Council) is a global non-governmental organization dedicated to promoting responsible forest management worldwide and has become the most widely respected forest certification system globally. To earn FSC certification, wood products must meet stringent environmental, social, and economic criteria, ensuring their sustainability. FSC-certified wood is traceable back to its source, providing transparency and traceability throughout the supply chain.

All wood used for our furniture and cardboard packing is FSC certified.

The Amfori BSCI system helps companies to collectively identify, prevent and mitigate adverse human rights impacts in their supply chains. The system assists companies to comply with their corporate responsibility to respect human rights, in line with the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights.
